Chatfield Drilling specializes in professional geo-technical and environmental services in Pennsylvania and Ohio, offering safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant drilling for projects of all sizes. Whether you need geotechnical soil analysis or environmental site remediation, our experienced team is here to help you build on a solid foundation.

Geotechnical drilling services

Our geotechnical drilling services provide essential data for construction and environmental projects throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio. We use advanced techniques to ensure accurate, uncontaminated results for reliable site planning and analysis. Key services include:

  • Rock coring and soil borings. Wire-line and conventional methods to evaluate soil composition and site stability.
  • Piezometer and inclinometer installation. Monitoring groundwater levels and slope stability.
  • Test pit excavation and dewatering. Managing groundwater and assessing infiltration and drainage.
  • Foundation and site evaluation. Collecting the data structural design and planning depend on.

Environmental drilling services

Our environmental drilling services support environmental compliance, contamination assessment, and site restoration throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio. We use proven methods to deliver dependable results for environmental consultants and developers. Environmental services include:

  • Monitoring and extraction well installation.
  • In-situ chemical injection and soil remediation.
  • Abandonment of unused wells and full site restoration.
  • Carbon bed exchange and groundwater sampling.

Drilling methods for the sites we work

We apply the best drilling method based on site conditions:

  • Air-rotary drilling. Ideal for deep rock formations.
  • Hollow-stem auger drilling. Best for shallow environmental sampling.
  • Direct-push technology. Fast, accurate soil and groundwater data collection.

No two projects are alike. Chatfield provides custom geo-technical and environmental solutions tailored to each site’s challenges. From unstable soils to contaminated sites, we have the equipment, training, and insight to deliver precise, long-lasting results.

Safety and compliance on every project

We strictly follow OSHA HAZWOPER standards and are prequalified by ODOT and PennDOT. Our team is fully trained in environmental safety protocols and committed to upholding the highest standards on every job.

Why Chatfield for geo-technical and environmental work

  • Decades of drilling experience in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
  • Advanced equipment for complex drilling applications.
  • Tailored, project-specific solutions.
  • Full regulatory support and compliance assurance.

The same fleet drills residential and commercial water wells; if a project needs both an investigation and a supply well, one crew can plan for both.

A LITTLE CLARITY

Good Questions.
Straight Answers.

What is geotechnical drilling used for?

Geotechnical and environmental drilling supports investigation of subsurface conditions rather than producing a water supply. It is typically used to gather information about soil and rock conditions for engineering, construction, and environmental assessment purposes. The scope of any project depends on what the investigation needs to establish.

How is this different from water well drilling?

A water well is constructed to produce and deliver water to a property, with casing, development, and a pumping system. Geotechnical and environmental work is investigative, aimed at characterizing conditions below the surface. The equipment and experience overlap, which is why Chatfield offers both, but the objectives and deliverables differ.

Which drilling method will you use on my site?

The one the site calls for. Air rotary suits deep rock formations, hollow-stem auger suits shallow environmental sampling, and direct-push technology gives fast, accurate soil and groundwater data where the ground allows it. Unstable soils and contaminated sites each change the choice, which is settled during scoping rather than assumed.

How much does geotechnical drilling cost?

Cost depends on the scope of the investigation, the number and depth of locations, site access, and the conditions encountered. Because these projects vary widely, a scope discussion comes before any figure. Call (724) 588-2652 to discuss a project.

Do you work with engineers and contractors?

Chatfield’s drilling experience across Pennsylvania and Ohio covers a range of subsurface conditions, including the glaciated areas of Northwest Pennsylvania and deeper bedrock formations. Project requirements, scheduling, and deliverables are best discussed directly so the approach matches what the investigation calls for.
