WATER IN CRAWFORD COUNTY

What the Public Record Says
About Crawford County Water.

EPA's map shows a public system at only nine of the 16 Crawford County towns on our list, and eight of those nine systems pump groundwater. Cambridge Springs, drawing on French Creek, is the one system with a stream intake.

Nine systems, eight of them on wells

Meadville Area Water Authority is the largest, serving 17,339 people from seven active wells. Titusville Municipal Water pumps from ten wells for 6,146 people. Saegertown draws on seven wells and Linesville on six, while Cochranton, Conneaut Lake, Conneautville and Springboro run on two each. Cambridge Springs Borough takes French Creek water for 2,363 people.

Blooming Valley, Centerville, Hydetown, Spartansburg, Townville, Venango and Woodcock have no system on EPA's map. That isn't proof that no home there is on public water, and a home on a public line gets its annual report from the utility. For homes on wells, the Crawford County treatment page covers what the USGS samples show, and a water test gives your own numbers.

Yields from 6 to 20 gallons a minute

Around Springboro, the median yield in the logs is 6 gallons a minute. Conneautville and Spartansburg log 10, Cambridge Springs and Centerville 11, while Blooming Valley and Cochranton reach 20. Median well depths run from 60 feet around Springboro to 102 around Hydetown, with Titusville (101) and Meadville (96) close behind. The USGS county record of 2,318 wells has a median of 80 feet and a middle half of 60 to 107.

On a slower well, the pump system has to match what the well gives, and Chatfield designs and installs it that way: a submersible pump sized to the well's yield and a pressure tank sized to the household.

Six rock units at 16 town centers

Corry Sandstone through Riceville Formation is mapped at four town centers: Centerville, Hydetown, Spartansburg and Titusville. Berea Sandstone through Riceville Formation is mapped at Blooming Valley, Meadville and Woodcock, and the Venango Formation at Cambridge Springs, Saegertown and Venango. Berea Sandstone through Venango Formation is mapped at Cochranton, Conneaut Lake and Linesville. The Chadakoin Formation is mapped at Conneautville and Springboro, and the Cuyahoga Group at Townville.

Logged depth to bedrock has a median of 19 feet around Meadville and 39 around Hydetown, with the other towns in between. Because each unit is mapped at a single point in town, the nearest logs are worth reading before a new well is drilled. Chatfield also drills geotechnical and environmental wells in the county.

Each well counts once, as the median of its samples. The 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese marks are EPA secondary standards, which are aesthetic limits, not health limits. FROM OUR CUSTOMERSPump replacement & well casing
“Chatfield Drilling replaced a submersible pump, extended our well casing above ground, and installed a sanitary cap at our farm house. This is our first experience with a well. Both Matt and Sam were happy to answer all of our questions, no matter how small, in a way that we could understand and enabled us to make informed decisions.”

A LITTLE CLARITY

Crawford County Questions.
Straight Answers.

Do you drill wells in Crawford County?

Yes. Residential and commercial wells across Crawford County, drilled with cable tool or air rotary methods to suit the geology under your property, with PA DEP permit assistance and water flow testing as part of the job.

My Crawford County well water smells like sulfur. Can you fix it?

Yes. Sulfur odor, rusty water, and an off taste are common local issues in Crawford County wells, and they are usually iron, manganese, or hydrogen sulfide coming up with the water. We test first, then match the equipment to the result: the CataPure for sulfur, the FerronX Iron System for iron and dissolved metals, and disinfection where bacteria are involved.

How far is Chatfield from Crawford County?

Our Greenville office is at 854 Mercer Rd., Greenville, PA 16125, about 44 minutes and 28.7 miles by road from Meadville. Service calls for Crawford County are scheduled from Greenville.

Which Crawford County communities do you serve?

All of them. Our service map lists 16 Crawford County communities, including Cambridge Springs, Conneaut Lake, Meadville, Springboro, Blooming Valley, Centerville, and the townships between them. If your town is not on the map, call anyway; the county line is the boundary, not the town list.

How hard is the water in Crawford County?

In USGS records for 35 Crawford County wells, the median hardness was 165 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 9.6 grains per gallon, and 77% of wells were hard or very hard. A softener sized to your test result handles it. The test comes first because hardness varies well to well, even on the same road.

Is there iron in Crawford County well water?

Often. 35% of the Crawford County wells in USGS records were above 0.3 mg/L of iron, the level where orange staining starts, and 45% were above 0.05 mg/L of manganese, the level behind black marks and a metallic taste. The FerronX Iron System treats iron and dissolved metals at the point of entry; testing establishes the level and the right configuration.

How deep are wells in Crawford County?

USGS has depth records for 2,318 Crawford County wells: the median is 80 feet, and the middle half fall between 60 and 107 feet. Your well's depth depends on the formation under your property and the yield your household needs, which is why Chatfield tests water flow rather than drilling to a number.
