The Village's Six Wells and Greensand
The village system is run by local government and serves 1,660 people through 529 connections. EPA lists six active wells, one treatment plant and one storage tank. Its treatment steps are permanganate for iron removal, chlorine added before filtration for disinfection, and greensand filtration for iron and manganese.
That work is done before the water reaches homes on the lines, which get their water report from the village. All four lead rounds on the system's record, from 2018 to 2025, are under the 0.015 mg/L action level. What a private well needs depends on its own water test. Where iron or manganese turn up, iron removal at the house does the job the greensand does for the village.
Shallow Rock and High Water Near Orwell
Rock is close here: half of the 712 logs that record it reach bedrock within 20 feet, and three in four within 34. Casing is still set to at least 25 feet, Ohio's private-well minimum. The rock mapped at the town center is Ohio Shale. Water stands close to the top too, a median 10 feet below ground in 841 logs.
The spread is in the flow. The middle half of 866 logs runs from 3 to 20 gallons a minute, so two wells not far apart can differ a lot. A strong well has room for a larger household or a farm; a slow one leans on a pump matched to its refill rate and a pressure tank. Residential well drilling covers the hole itself.
