WATER TREATMENT · 39 MIN FROM OUR CORTLAND OFFICE
Jefferson’s village water arrives already filtered, bought from Aqua Ohio’s Ashtabula system. Private wells nearby are shallow and slow, with water a median 8 feet below ground, so each supply calls for a different first test.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Ashtabula County wells between 1982 and 2016. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

The Equipment Jefferson
Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.
- VERY HARD AT THE MEDIAN
Water softeners
89% of sampled Ashtabula County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 18.2 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

Iron & manganese removal
56% of sampled wells were above 0.3 mg/L of iron and 78% above the manganese line. The FerronX goes in at the point of entry, ahead of the softener.

Chlorine removal
Jefferson’s public water is disinfected surface water, so the chlorine is still in it at the tap. The CityLux takes it out of the whole supply.

WATER TREATMENT IN JEFFERSON
What Jefferson Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Bought filtered from Aqua Ohio - Ashtabula
The public system here (EPA ID OH0401812) is privately owned and serves 3,226 people through 1,422 connections. It buys surface water from Aqua Ohio - Ashtabula, which filters it before the sale, and holds it in 2 storage tanks. EPA lists no treatment plant and no treatment steps for the village system itself.
The utility’s water report spells out the details of that treatment, disinfectant included. Whichever disinfectant it names, a whole-home CityLux removes both chlorine and chloramine. Bring the report to your water test and we’ll read it next to your tap’s own numbers.
Jefferson’s lead rounds, 2016 to 2025
EPA’s record for the village system starts in 2016 at 0.0028 mg/L, then shows 0.0024 in 2019 and 0.0027 in 2020. The 2021 round was the highest on the list at 0.0092 mg/L, still under the 0.015 mg/L action level. Every round from 2022 through 2025 is recorded as zero.
Each figure is the 90th percentile of homes sampled across the system. Lead at a single faucet depends on that home’s service line, solder and fixtures, so it can sit above or below the system number. A home test settles it. Where one finds lead, we’d put an Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink, and contaminants lists what else it removes.
Shallow Ohio Shale wells around the village
ODNR logs within 5 miles put the median well at 53 feet deep, with half between 45 and 60 feet, and rock at a median 22 feet. The mapped bedrock is Ohio Shale. Water stands a median 8 feet below ground, and in a quarter of wells it is 5 feet or less. Yields are low: a median 4 gallons a minute, and 2 or less in a quarter of logs.
Wells this shallow are one reason a bacteria check belongs in the first round of testing here. If it confirms coliform, a Luminor UV can go in after the filters. With yields this modest, any filter that backwashes has to be matched to what the well can supply.
The Ashtabula County record
USGS samples from Ashtabula County wells, taken 1982–2016: 89% of wells hard or very hard, 56% over the iron line, 8% below pH 6.5. The full record, measure by measure, is on the Ashtabula County water treatment page.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Jefferson Questions.
Straight Answers.
Who treats the water that reaches Jefferson village homes?
Aqua Ohio’s Ashtabula system. EPA lists the village system as buying filtered surface water from Aqua Ohio - Ashtabula, with no treatment steps of its own. For the details of that treatment and what was measured in the supply, the utility’s water report is the source. A test at your tap shows what your own plumbing adds.
Does the Ashtabula County record fit wells near Jefferson?
It fits only in general terms and can’t predict any one well. USGS sampled 48 county wells for pH and found a median of 7.8, with 8% below 6.5, so acidic water is the exception in that record. Hardness and iron rest on only 9 wells. Your well gets its own test, and any equipment is sized to that result.
What does a water test cover for a Jefferson home?
It depends on the supply. On village water, it reads hardness and disinfectant at your tap, and lead can be added through a certified lab. On a well, it covers bacteria, iron, manganese, hardness and pH. Call the Cortland office at (330) 828-6060 to set one up.
Do you test water in Jefferson?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Jefferson from our Cortland office, about 39 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
