Pottsville Sandstone and Strong Yields
Mapped at the town center, the rock under Fredonia is the Pottsville Formation, sandstone and conglomerate of Pennsylvanian age. Depth to rock across the 356 logs that record it is a median 25 feet, with a quarter at 38 or more, so casing, which usually runs down to rock, is a modest part of most wells.
The yields are the standout. Half of the 513 logs fall between 15 and 35 gallons a minute, so a standard submersible pump is rarely held back to protect the well, and a constant-pressure setup is often within reach. Residential well drilling covers a new hole, including PA DEP permit assistance, and the cost of a new well shows how depth and casing add up.
Two Borough Wells and a Pumphouse
Fredonia Borough serves 254 connections from two groundwater wells, which EPA lists as Well 3 and Well 4, and one listed facility, a pumphouse. EPA lists two steps: gaseous chlorination before treatment and 4-log treatment of viruses, meaning disinfection strong enough to inactivate almost all of them. The record we draw on shows no lead sampling rounds for the system, and homes on the line get their water report from the borough.
Private wells nearby get none of the borough's chlorination. Manganese belongs on their test list next to iron: in Mercer County's USGS samples, 54% of 93 wells were over 0.05 mg/L. A water test shows your own levels, and a FerronX iron system handles iron and manganese together.
