Pierpont's Wells Rank Shallowest of 19 Towns
Pierpont sits at the bottom of the Ashtabula County depth list, 19th of 19 towns by median. Its median of 50 feet compares with 60 across the county's 5,480 domestic logs, and only a quarter of local logs go 60 feet or deeper.
The band where rock starts is the steadiest part of the record. Of 373 logs that record bedrock, half reach it by 22 feet, and the middle half fall between 18 and 27. The rock mapped at the town center is Ohio Shale, a Devonian black shale. Under Ohio's private-well rules, casing runs at least 25 feet, farther where rock is deeper, and is sealed in place. Residential well drilling covers the work, and the cost page explains what goes into a quote.
Switch and Tank on a Pierpont Well
With water a median 8 feet down and a median yield of 4 gallons a minute, the pump in a well here has a short lift and a modest supply. Much of what a household notices is set above ground. The pressure switch turns the pump on and off between two set pressures, and the pressure tank stores water under pressure so the pump doesn't start at every tap.
A worn switch, or a tank that has lost its air charge, shows up as a pump clicking on and off in quick bursts. On the slower wells, a quarter of logs at 2 gallons a minute or less, a larger tank also gives the well more time to recover between starts.
