Permanganate and Greensand on the Borough Supply
EPA lists Volant Borough Water Department as a small groundwater system: two active wells, Well #1 and Well #2, serving about 120 people through 92 connections. Its listed steps are permanganate and greensand filtration, both aimed at iron and manganese, plus chlorine and 4-log treatment of viruses, disinfection strong enough to remove nearly all of them. Homes on those lines get their water report from the borough.
A home on its own well has none of that ahead of the tap. Orange stains or dark specks on fixtures are the usual sign of iron or manganese, and a water test, on site or through a certified lab, puts numbers on them before any equipment is chosen. The Lawrence County treatment page covers the options.
Deep Soil and Casing Around Volant
The Pottsville Formation, sandstone and conglomerate, is mapped at the town center, but how far down rock starts varies widely from lot to lot. Of the 464 logs that note bedrock, a quarter found it within 17 feet and a quarter only past 60. Casing usually runs down to rock, so the difference between those lots can be a long run of extra casing.
The finished wells are among the shallower of nine Lawrence County towns, and a quarter of the 656 depth logs stopped by 81 feet. The cost page explains what else goes into a price, and for an older well that is losing output, a well inspection is the first step. The Greenville office drills with air rotary or cable tool and handles PA DEP permit assistance.
