Bought From the Shenango Valley Plant

EPA lists New Wilmington Borough Water Department as buying its water rather than producing it. It is purchased surface water, filtered, from Aqua PA’s Shenango Valley plant. The borough has no wells or intakes of its own on the EPA record. Its own record lists no treatment steps, and the borough’s water report is the place to read about the water it delivers. The system serves about 4,500 people through 696 connections.

Wells outside the borough’s lines are a separate story. Their water comes from the rock untreated, and a water test is the only way to know what one holds. The Lawrence County treatment page sets out what the county’s USGS samples show and which treatment matches which result.

Pottsville Rock and Shallower Wells

The Pottsville Formation, sandstone and conglomerate, is mapped at the town center. The 579 depth logs within 5 miles give the lowest median of nine Lawrence County towns, and rock is close too. Half of the 418 logs that note it reached bedrock within 24 feet, so casing, which usually runs down to rock, is often short.

With yields at a median 20 gallons a minute, the pump side is usually straightforward: a submersible pump sized for the house and a pressure tank matched to it. Depth still sets most of the price of a new well, and the drilling cost page explains how. The Greenville office provides PA DEP permit assistance.

FROM OUR CUSTOMERSPump replacement & well casing
“Chatfield Drilling replaced a submersible pump, extended our well casing above ground, and installed a sanitary cap at our farm house. This is our first experience with a well. Both Matt and Sam were happy to answer all of our questions, no matter how small, in a way that we could understand and enabled us to make informed decisions.”

Beyond those, the rest of the 9 Lawrence County communities on our service map, from the same office.

How deep are wells around New Wilmington?

Pennsylvania’s groundwater database (PaGWIS) lists 579 domestic wells within 5 miles of New Wilmington: the median is 115 feet deep, and the middle half fall between 83 and 161 feet. The median well was logged at 20 gallons per minute. Drillers reached bedrock at a median of 24 feet. Your own well's depth depends on the ground under your lot.

What do New Wilmington’s lead results show?

EPA records one lead number per sampling round, the 90th percentile, a reading near the top of the homes sampled. For the borough system it was 0.0022 mg/L for the round ending in 2016, recorded as zero in 2019, 0.0023 in 2022 and 0.00095 in 2025, all under the 0.015 mg/L action level. Your own faucet can differ. If a home test finds lead, an Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis unit at the sink is the common fix.

Is a New Wilmington well strong enough for irrigation or livestock?

Some are. A quarter of the 543 yield logs show 35 gallons a minute or more, well beyond what a house alone uses. Farm and irrigation wells are part of Chatfield’s drilling work, and the pump system is designed for the flow the new well actually produces. Call (724) 588-2652 about a bigger supply.
