Chloramine in Aqua's Shenango Valley Water
Aqua PA's Shenango Valley plant draws from the Shenango River for 17,152 connections. EPA lists chlorine before and after treatment, and chlorine dioxide. Powdered activated carbon and peroxide treat taste and odor, and permanganate treats iron and manganese. The list goes on with lime and soda ash, coagulation, settling and rapid sand filtration, pH adjustment, fluoride, an orthophosphate corrosion inhibitor, ultraviolet light and chloramines. Aqua sends customers their water report.
A CityLux whole-home system removes both chlorine and chloramine; see chlorine removal. EPA's lead results, the 90th percentile of sampled taps, were 0.0028 mg/L for the round ending 2016 and recorded as zero for 2019, 2022 and 2025, all under the 0.015 action level. Your own tap can differ, and reverse osmosis at the sink is the usual answer if a home test finds lead.
Deep Holes, Steady Flow Near Farrell
Most of a Farrell well is drilled in rock, and there is a lot of it. By median depth the town ranks 2nd of 15 Mercer County towns, and a quarter of the 364 local logs went to 150 feet or more. Rock is often shallow, a median 22 feet in 192 logs, so casing tends to be short.
Yield is the steadier number. Half the logs fall between 10 and 20 gallons a minute, which makes the pump choice more predictable than the footage. The deeper the pump has to hang, the more a submersible pump is chosen for lift as well as flow, and the water level measured on site sets that. The cost page shows what each extra foot adds, and PA DEP permit assistance comes with residential drilling.
