WATER TREATMENT · 64 MIN FROM OUR GREENVILLE OFFICE
Edinboro Water Authority draws on three wells, and its treatment includes packed-tower aeration and chlorine. Its four lead rounds, 2016 to 2025, ranged from a recorded zero to 0.00363 mg/L, all under the 0.015 mg/L action level.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Erie County wells between 1927 and 2023. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.

Water softeners
68% of sampled Erie County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 8.2 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

Iron & manganese removal
33% of sampled wells were above 0.3 mg/L of iron and 83% above the manganese line. The FerronX goes in at the point of entry, ahead of the softener.

What Edinboro Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Three wells and a stripping tower
The authority is a groundwater system serving a population of 7,800 through 1,631 connections. EPA lists three wells and three facilities: a stripping tower and two treatment plants.
The tower lines up with a step on the list, packed-tower aeration for organics removal: water trickles down through packing while air blown up through it carries dissolved volatile compounds away. The authority also chlorinates before and after treatment and adds fluoride. It treats iron and manganese by sequestration, which keeps them dissolved, and reports 4-log virus treatment, a rating for how thoroughly its disinfection inactivates viruses. At the tap, chlorine is what people notice. CityLux removes it for the whole house, and chlorine taste describes the signs.
Edinboro’s lead rounds since 2016
EPA records four lead rounds for the authority, each the 90th percentile of homes sampled: 0 mg/L for the round ending September 2016, 0.002 in 2019, 0.00287 in 2022 and 0.00363 in 2025. The action level is 0.015 mg/L, and all four are below it.
Those figures describe taps across the system. Your own kitchen tap can read differently, depending on the service line and fixtures, so a certified-lab test is the way to get your number. If it finds lead, an Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis unit at the sink treats the water you drink and cook with. It also reduces nitrate, arsenic and PFAS when a lab panel flags them.
699 private well logs near Edinboro
Homes outside the authority’s lines draw from private wells. Within 5 miles of Edinboro, PaGWIS holds 699 logs. The median well is 60 feet deep, with the middle half between 50 and 75. Bedrock sits at a median 26 feet, and median yield is 10 gallons per minute, with the middle half from 6 to 20. The rock is the Venango Formation, Late Devonian siltstone, conglomerate, sandstone and shale.
A well’s treatment follows its test. A sulfur smell calls for a CataPure Carbon System with chlorine or peroxide injection. Hard water calls for a LuxSoft water softener matched to your hardness reading. Iron goes first in line, to a FerronX Iron System, so it doesn’t foul the equipment after it.
The Erie County record
USGS samples from Erie County wells, taken 1927–2023: 68% of wells hard or very hard, 33% over the iron line, 4% below pH 6.5. The full record, measure by measure, is on the Erie County water treatment page.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Edinboro Questions.
Straight Answers.
What does the stripping tower do for Edinboro water?
EPA lists packed-tower aeration among the authority’s steps, with organics removal as its purpose. In a packed tower, water runs down over packing material while air moves up through it, and volatile compounds leave with the air. The record doesn’t name which compounds it targets; the authority’s annual water quality report is the place to look for that.
Is Edinboro water chlorinated?
Yes. The authority reports chlorine gas added both before and after treatment, which disinfects the water on its way through the mains. If you notice the taste or smell, a CityLux system at the point of entry takes it out for the whole house, including the showers, not only the kitchen tap.
I’m on a well near Edinboro. Where should I start?
With a water test at the tap for the readings that decide the equipment: iron, manganese, hardness and pH. Add a certified-lab test for bacteria or nitrate. For context, USGS samples found 68 percent of Erie County wells hard or very hard, so hardness is a common finding, but your own result decides it.
Do you test water in Edinboro?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Edinboro from our Greenville office, about 64 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
