Softening and Greensand on Barkeyville’s Supply
EPA’s record for the Barkeyville Municipal Authority lists two active wells, Well #2 and Well #4, and one treatment plant. Its steps cover disinfection with chlorine, iron and manganese removal with permanganate and greensand filtration, and softening by ion exchange. EPA also lists 4-log treatment of viruses, meaning all but a tiny share are killed. Homes on the authority’s lines get their water report from the utility.
A private well sends untreated groundwater straight to the house, so whether it needs any of those steps is a question for a water test, on site or through a certified lab. Some wells call for iron removal, some for a water softener, some for nothing. The county’s USGS samples cover only 7 wells, so your own result counts for more.
Allegheny Rock and the Casing Question
The Allegheny Formation is mapped at the town center: Pennsylvanian sandstone, shale, limestone, clay and coal in layers. The logs show how much the cover over rock varies from lot to lot. Of the 385 that record bedrock, a quarter found it within 15 feet and another quarter only at 50 feet or more.
That spread matters because casing usually runs down to rock, so a lot with deep soil takes more casing before the bit is working in rock. Total depth is the other part of the bill, and around Barkeyville a quarter of wells went past 135 feet. The cost page explains what moves the price, and residential drilling covers how a new well is permitted, drilled and finished.
