Five Village Wells and a Greensand Filter
EPA’s record for East Palestine's village system lists a groundwater system serving about 4,761 people through 2,100 connections, with five active wells, one treatment plant and three storage tanks. The listed treatment steps are chlorine before and after treatment, permanganate and greensand filtration to remove manganese and iron, granular activated carbon for organics, and fluoride. Homes on it get their water report from the village.
EPA records the lead 90th percentile as 0 mg/L for the 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 rounds, and as 0.00293 mg/L for 2023, all under the 0.015 mg/L action level. That is a village-wide measure, and your own tap can differ. If a home test finds lead, reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is the usual answer.
Ten-Gallon Wells Around the Village
For homes on their own wells, the 1,048 local logs with a yield put the median at 10 gallons per minute. A quarter give 5 or less, and a quarter 20 or more. Depth is moderate, 125 feet at the median against the county’s 135, and water rests a median 47 feet down.
On the slower wells, the pump is matched to what the well gives back, and a pressure tank sized to the house cuts down on pump starts. A private well also has no plant ahead of it, so any iron or manganese in the water is the owner’s to deal with. Iron removal covers the FerronX Iron System, which handles both.
