WATER TREATMENT · 35 MIN FROM OUR GREENVILLE OFFICE
Conneaut Lake’s borough wells are treated for iron and manganese at the plant, with permanganate and greensand filtration. A private well nearby has no such step unless the homeowner adds one, and that decision starts with a water test.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Crawford County wells between 1928 and 2023. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.

Water softeners
77% of sampled Crawford County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 9.6 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

What Conneaut Lake Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Two borough wells, filtered for iron
Conneaut Lake Borough’s system runs on groundwater: two active wells and one treatment plant. It serves a population of 870 on 373 connections. The steps it reports center on iron. Chlorine gas goes in first, ahead of filtration. Permanganate and greensand filters then take out iron and manganese, and the record lists 4-log virus treatment, the virus-disinfection level set out in EPA’s Ground Water Rule.
For a borough customer, iron and manganese are handled before the water reaches the mains, and the water arrives carrying chlorine. If the taste or smell bothers you, CityLux takes chlorine out for the whole house.
Doing the plant’s job at a private well
Homes outside the borough’s lines get none of the plant’s treatment. A private well has no permanganate feed and no greensand bed unless someone installs one. At home scale, the FerronX Iron System does that job for iron and manganese. It keeps orange and black staining out of fixtures and laundry, and it protects a softener or carbon filter placed after it.
Whether you need one, and what size, comes from a water test and consultation. Chatfield tests on site, and bacteria or health questions go to a certified lab. The Crawford County page shows how often USGS samples in the county crossed the iron and manganese lines.
What 1,012 nearby well logs show
PaGWIS holds 1,012 well logs within 5 miles of Conneaut Lake. The median well was drilled to 83 feet, and the middle half fall between 64 and 112. The median yield is 15 gallons per minute, with the middle half from 10 to 20. In the 423 logs that record it, bedrock sits at a median 24 feet, and a quarter of them reached rock within 14 feet.
The mapped rock runs from the Berea Sandstone through the Venango Formation: Late Devonian shale, sandstone and siltstone. A well with a steady yield can still deliver hard water. A LuxSoft water softener sized to the test handles it once iron is out of the way, and a sulfur smell gets a CataPure Carbon System.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Conneaut Lake Questions.
Straight Answers.
Does Conneaut Lake borough water need an iron filter?
The borough’s plant already removes iron and manganese with permanganate and greensand filtration, so a borough home isn’t starting from raw well water. If you still see staining at a borough tap, test before buying equipment. A water test shows what is actually coming out of your faucet, and the result decides whether you need any equipment at all.
Is there a lead result on file for the Conneaut Lake water system?
EPA’s lead table lists no 90th-percentile rounds for this system, so there’s no system figure to report. A system number would describe taps across the borough anyway, and one house can differ. A certified-lab test of your own tap answers the question. If lead shows up, reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is the usual fix.
I’m on a well outside the borough. What does the county record suggest?
USGS samples of Crawford County wells are the wider guide: 77 percent were hard or very hard, and 45 percent were above the manganese line. Your own well may or may not follow that pattern, so the answer for your home comes from a water test at the tap, and then only the equipment it calls for.
Do you test water in Conneaut Lake?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Conneaut Lake from our Greenville office, about 35 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
