WATER TREATMENT · 44 MIN FROM OUR GREENVILLE OFFICE

Meadville’s city water comes from seven authority-run wells, treated with a polyphosphate corrosion inhibitor among other steps. All five lead rounds on the system’s record, 2016 through 2025, came in under EPA’s action level.

THE CRAWFORD COUNTY RECORD What a well in Meadville is likely to need.

USGS sampled Crawford County wells between 1928 and 2023. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

What Meadville Water Says,
and What We Do About It.

Meadville’s lead record, 2016 to 2025

EPA’s record for the Meadville Area Water Authority lists five lead rounds, each reported as the 90th percentile of the homes sampled. The round ending September 2016 came in at 0.002 mg/L. The rounds ending June 2020, December 2020 and September 2022 are recorded as zero. The round ending September 2025 was 0.00117 mg/L. The action level is 0.015 mg/L, and all five sit under it.

The authority’s polyphosphate inhibitor is there for corrosion control, to protect pipes. Still, a system figure is measured across the city’s sampled taps, not yours. If a certified-lab test of your kitchen tap finds lead, an Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis unit at the sink is the usual answer. Contaminants covers what else a lab panel checks.

Seven wells, then chlorine and phosphate

The authority serves a population of 17,339 through 5,265 connections, all from groundwater. EPA lists seven active wells, numbered 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8, and three treatment facilities: a treatment plant plus the Limber Road and Hillcrest sites. The reported steps are sequestration for iron and manganese, the polyphosphate inhibitor, hypochlorite added after treatment, and fluoride. The list also includes 4-log virus treatment, meaning disinfection strong enough to take out nearly every virus.

At a city tap, that adds up to chlorinated, fluoridated water. Chlorine is the part some households want gone; CityLux takes it out at the point of entry, and the chlorine taste page covers the signs. Whether anything else is worth treating on city water is a question for a test at your own tap.

Township wells over Late Devonian rock

Homes on private wells pump their own water. The state’s PaGWIS well records include 1,389 logs within 5 miles of Meadville. The median well is 96 feet deep, with the middle half between 70 and 120. Bedrock came up at a median 19 feet in the 753 logs that note it, and the median yield was 15 gallons per minute.

The mapped rock runs from the Berea Sandstone through the Riceville Formation, Late Devonian shale, sandstone and siltstone. What comes out of it varies from well to well, so each well gets a water test and consultation before any equipment is picked. Particles and grit go to an Alluvium Sediment System at the front of the line, and iron and manganese to a FerronX Iron System.

The Crawford County record

USGS samples from Crawford County wells, taken 1928–2023: 77% of wells hard or very hard, 35% over the iron line, 4% below pH 6.5. The full record, measure by measure, is on the Crawford County water treatment page.

A LITTLE CLARITY

Meadville Questions.
Straight Answers.

What does “sequestration” mean on Meadville’s treatment list?

It’s the step the authority reports for iron and manganese. Sequestration adds a chemical that holds those metals in solution, so they are less likely to settle out as stains. If you do see orange or dark staining at a city tap, a water test will show whether iron or manganese is reaching your faucet, and at what level.

Is the authority’s lead figure the same as my Meadville tap?

No. Each round’s figure is the 90th percentile of the homes sampled across the system, so it describes the city as a whole. Your service line and fixtures can make your tap read differently. A certified-lab test of the kitchen tap is the only way to get your own number, and if it finds lead, reverse osmosis at the sink takes care of it.

How quickly do wells around Meadville reach rock?

In the 753 logs within 5 miles that record it, the median depth to bedrock is 19 feet, and a quarter reached rock within 12 feet. The median well goes on to 96 feet. Depth doesn’t determine the treatment. That depends on what’s in the water, which only a test at the tap shows.

Do you test water in Meadville?

Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Meadville from our Greenville office, about 44 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
