Tied for Second-Deepest in Columbiana County
Wellsville’s wells run deep, tied for the second-deepest median of the county’s 21 towns at 165 feet, set against 135 for domestic wells across ODNR’s county records. A quarter of local wells pass 225 feet. Most of that footage is rock: in three logs out of four, bedrock came within 12 feet of the surface.
So a new well here is usually a long bore through rock, with casing running from the surface down into it and grouted in place, and footage drives much of what a new well costs. Geologic maps show the Allegheny and Pottsville Groups under the town: shale, siltstone, limestone and sandstone, Pennsylvanian in age. Residential well drilling covers the steps, from sizing the well to setting the pump.
Deep Water Levels Around Wellsville
Water in these wells rests low: the median resting level is 85 feet, and a quarter sit at 125 feet or deeper. The pump has to hang well below that to stay submerged while it runs, which makes this submersible pump country; jet pumps work best where water sits much closer to the top.
Yields are light as well. Half the logs record 10 gallons per minute or less, and a quarter 5 or less, so the pump’s output is matched to what the well can recover, not only to the house. When pressure fades on a well like this, pump diagnostics should look at the water level as well as the pump. For iron, manganese and hardness, see Wellsville water treatment.
