WATER TREATMENT · 52 MIN FROM OUR CORTLAND OFFICE
Around Petersburg, rock starts at a median 29 feet and wells go a median 118 feet, so most draw their water from bedrock. What that shale, siltstone, limestone and sandstone puts in your water is the first thing to test.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Mahoning County wells between 1978 and 2001. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.

Water softeners
60% of sampled Mahoning County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 10.2 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

What Petersburg Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Bedrock wells, half 83 to 164 feet deep
ODNR logs within 5 miles show half the wells between 83 and 164 feet deep, with rock reached between 18 and 46 feet in the middle half of logs. Water stands a median 32 feet below ground, and in a quarter of wells it sits 50 feet or deeper. The median yield is 12 gallons a minute; a quarter give 8 or less. The mapped bedrock is the Allegheny and Pottsville Groups, Pennsylvanian in age.
Water that has sat in that mix of rock can carry hardness, iron, a sulfur smell, or none of them. The county record doesn’t settle which, so a Chatfield water test does, on site or through a certified lab. The Mahoning County page has the wider county numbers.
Equipment order for a Petersburg well
When a test calls for more than one system, the order matters, since anything taken out early can’t foul the equipment after it. Sediment comes out first, through an Alluvium Sediment System, so grit doesn’t foul anything downstream. Iron and manganese come next, with the FerronX Iron System. A sulfur smell is handled by the CataPure Carbon System with chlorine or peroxide injection. A LuxSoft softener follows, once the iron is gone and can’t coat its resin. A Luminor UV goes last in the line, after filtration, because the light works best on clear water.
Drinking water can then get one more step: Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink, if a lab result calls for it.
pH in the Mahoning County samples
USGS pH readings from 7 Mahoning County wells have a median of 7.6, and none fell below 6.5. By that record, acidic water isn’t the expected finding here, so a calcite neutralizer isn’t something we assume. It still gets checked: pH is part of every test, and a low reading is the usual reason behind blue-green stains on fixtures. If yours reads low, an acid neutralizer raises it before the water reaches the pipes.
Homes nearby on a public supply get their water report from the utility, and a tap test covers what the house itself adds.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Petersburg Questions.
Straight Answers.
How much water do wells around Petersburg give?
The logs put the median at 12 gallons a minute, with half the wells between 8 and 20. That number matters for treatment as well as supply: iron filters and softeners rinse themselves with a burst of water, so the flow of your well is part of sizing any equipment that goes on it.
Does a Petersburg well need a UV system?
Only when a bacteria test comes back positive. A confirmed coliform result is the trigger, and a Luminor UV can then go in after the filters, as the last piece in the line. Without that result, UV isn’t added by default. The bacteria sample is part of the water test and goes to a certified lab.
Who comes out to test water in Petersburg?
A Chatfield crew from the Cortland office. The test and consultation happen at your home, with samples sent to a certified lab when a reading needs one, and the results are explained before anything is proposed. Call (330) 828-6060 to book a visit and ask any questions first.
Do you test water in Petersburg?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Petersburg from our Cortland office, about 52 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
