Deepest Median of Nine Towns, Shallow Rock
The 813 depth logs within 5 miles give the town the deepest median of nine Lawrence County towns, and a quarter of them went past 251 feet. Soil depth isn’t the reason: a quarter of the logs that note bedrock found it within 10 feet. The Pottsville Formation, Pennsylvanian sandstone and conglomerate, is mapped at the town center.
In fractured sandstone, a well draws from the openings its bore crosses, and drilling continues until the flow is enough for the house. Footage drives the cost of a new well, so plan around the deeper end of the local range, not the median. Our well drilling page covers the air rotary and cable tool rigs, and the Greenville office handles PA DEP permit assistance.
Making a 5-Gallon Well Work
A quarter of the 791 yield logs around Ellport show 5 gallons a minute or less, and only a quarter show 20 or more. A well at the low end can still supply a house, as long as the system never asks it for more than it gives at any moment.
The common setup is storage. The well fills a tank slowly through the day, and a booster pump pressurizes the house from that tank. On a well with a little more flow, a correctly sized submersible pump and a larger pressure tank may be enough. A variable-speed upgrade for constant pressure steadies the shower, but it doesn’t add a gallon to what the well gives.
