A Quarter of Wampum Wells Past 217 Feet
The Pottsville Formation, Pennsylvanian sandstone and conglomerate, is mapped at the town center. The logs around it describe deep wells in a broad range: only a quarter of the 973 depth records stopped by 100 feet, and the town ranks fourth of nine in Lawrence County by median depth.
The deep end is what to plan for. A longer bore adds footage and can mean a lower pump setting with more wire and pipe, and those feed into the cost of a new well. Depth doesn’t buy yield in any simple way either: the median around Wampum is 15 gallons a minute. Residential drilling explains the job from the permit to the pressure tank.
Two Wells, Two Plants, Greensand for Iron
EPA lists the Borough of Wampum Water Department as a groundwater system with two active wells, Well #5 and Well #6, and two treatment plants, Clyde Street and Davidson Street. The steps it reports are greensand filtration for iron removal, chlorine, and 4-log treatment of viruses (nearly all are killed). It serves about 832 people through 342 connections, and they get their water report from the borough.
For homes on private wells, iron removal happens at the house or not at all. A water test, on site or through a certified lab, shows the iron level against the 0.3 mg/L staining line. Where it is over, a FerronX Iron System does the job, and iron removal explains how. Orange stains on fixtures are usually the first sign.
